On Friday August 26th, Colin Kaepernick, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, made the most important decision he would make in that game before the first pass was even thrown. If you somehow haven’t heard already, he chose to sit down on the bench while the Star Spangled Banner played. Ever since he made that bold statement the nation has become embroiled in heated rhetoric.
After the game, he had an interview with NFL Media in which he was asked about his actions. He said “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag or country that oppresses Black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Ever since, he has faced insults, slurs and has even been told that if he doesn’t want to stand for the playing of the national anthem that maybe he should just “leave.” Some say that he was seriously disrespecting his country and some think that he was just exercising his right to freedom of expression.
Political commentator Tomi Lahren had a lot to say about the issue on her online video show on TheBlaze. The video of her take on Kaepernick’s actions can be found on her Facebook page. I’ll let you decide for yourself if you agree with what she has to say or if you disagree. In my next post I’ll continue discussing what she had to say about Colin Kaepernick and how I feel about it personally. To be continued…
