Keith Ellison from Minnesota was the first Muslim American to be elected to Congress and now has his sights set on being the chairman of the Democratic National Convention. He has served in the House of Representatives for five terms, so he is a veteran Congressman.
According to Politico, many people back him, including Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Chuck Schumer. Since he is well liked, that would make him a good candidate for the position.
Since he is an African-American Muslim man, it would symbolize a stand against the hate that Trump has sparked. Not only is he qualified and well-liked, but the symbolism of it would give the Democratic party a person to galvanize behind.
According to this article on Politico, “The Minnesota Democrat will get strong support for a DNC bid from Hill Democrats, who are convinced his energy and commitment to progressive principles will help revitalize the party.”
In that article on Politico the writers cover his personal and political history. This article from The Chicago Tribune also talks about what a good choice he would be for the position of DNC chairman.
